Do you know the difference between hot and cold film?

Hot foil stamping is a post-processing process that transfers gold foil or other stamping materials onto the surface of a substrate using a certain amount of pressure and temperature. It requires the use of specialized hot stamping machines and stamping plates to heat the stamping foil to a certain temperature and then apply pressure to make it adhere to the surface of the substrate.

Cold foil stamping is a method in which UV printing adhesive is used directly on the printing machine to transfer metal foils or other foil stamping materials onto the surface of the substrate, without the need for heating, and the foil stamping material is firmly adhered to the substrate using UV adhesive.

1. Processing Temperature

Hot foil stamping: It needs to be heated to a certain temperature (usually between 180-220 degrees Celsius) for processing.

Cold foil stamping: Performed at room temperature without the need for heating.

2. Foil foil effect

Hot foil stamping: The edges of stamped images are clear and sharp, and the surface has a high gloss; the stamped patterns are bright and smooth. Hot stamping can also be used for three-dimensional stamping to give packaging a unique tactile sensation.

Cold foil stamping: The effect is relatively soft, and the metallic gloss is not as strong as that of hot setting. However, the cold setting process can be used for embossing on various substrates, including paper, plastic, and metal.

3. Scope of application

Hot foil stamping: It is often used for packaging products that require high-quality hot stamping effects, such as high-end cosmetics and liquor packaging.

Cold foil stamping: It is widely used in various packaging and printing fields, such as food packaging, pharmaceutical packaging, and label printing, due to the fact that the cold foil stamping process can be applied to various types of substrates.
